Board of Education Approves Boundary Changes

The Board of Education voted to approve new elementary and middle school boundaries at its November 13 regular meeting. A revised boundary map can be found at https://bit.ly/3qTQJjH.

Process

With the passage of the 2022 bond measure and the construction of three new schools and two school expansions, the district needed to adjust school boundaries to balance enrollment districtwide. The Board of Education convened a Boundary Committee representative of the community to lead this process. The committee worked over the course of six months to gather feedback, analyze data, and develop a proposal that best balances schools now and in the available five-year forecast; maintains a continuity of experience for students; ensures efficient and effective transportation and district resources; and responds to community feedback. Impact

  • Elementary School Students — The new boundary schools for elementary students will take effect for the 2024 - 2025 school year. Students entering second grade at Tozer Primary School and fifth grade at all schools in 2024 - 2025 will have the option to remain at their current school, although transportation will not be provided.

  • Middle School Students — The new boundary schools for middle school students will take effect for the 2025 - 2026 school year. Students entering eighth grade in 2025 - 2026 will have the option to remain at their current school, although transportation will not be provided.

  • High School Students — Boundaries for high school students remain unchanged.

Due to capacity challenges, siblings of incoming Tozer second graders and fifth graders at all schools in 2024 - 2025, and incoming eighth graders in 2025 - 2026 will not be provided an opportunity to automatically remain at their current school, but may apply through the Choice Enrollment process.

Next Steps

All elementary school families will receive a message at the end of November notifying them of their new boundary school. If families desire to attend a school that is not their assigned boundary school, a Choice Enrollment application will be needed, including those entering second grade at Tozer Primary School and fifth grade at all schools.

If your student has been previously accepted to a school via Choice Enrollment, their acceptance will be honored through the remainder of their year(s) at that level (i.e., elementary, middle, or high), and you do not need to re-apply.

Entry into the Choice Enrollment application process does not guarantee enrollment except for incoming second graders at Tozer Primary School and fifth graders at all schools in 2024 - 2025. Enrollment acceptance is subject to space, resources, and conditions at the requested school per Board Policies JFBA and JFBB. Transportation will not be provided for Choice Enrollment students.* Families will be notified of their Choice Enrollment application status by February 9, 2024.

A similar form and process will take place next school year for affected middle school families.

*Note: Transportation for students with special education (center-based programming) needs will be determined by their special transportation status, documented in their Individualized Education Program (IEP), and addressed on a case-by-case basis.
