English Language Development Program
The English Language Development team works to serve linguistically diverse students at every school and level, providing Multilingual Learners with equal access to all Weld RE-4 educational opportunities.
Across our district, there are 30 distinct languages spoken by our families, other than English, including Spanish, Chinese Mandarin, Vietnamese, Polish, and more
After an eligibility assessment is complete, Multilingual Learners are provided language instruction support in line with the Colorado English Language Proficiency Standards and the English Language Development Program Requirements. Instruction focuses on the four domains of language acquisition: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This can manifest as small group instruction, in-class support, or specialized language acquisition classes.
Multilingual Learner Identification
Every school district is required by the U.S. Department of Education Office for Civil Rights to identify the primary language of a student. To achieve this, parents complete a Home Language Survey during enrollment, identifying any languages spoken and / or heard in the home.
English Language Development Services Determination
If parents indicate on the Home Language Survey that a language other than English is spoken and / or heard in the home, our team conducts an interview and / or a language acquisition assessment. This assesses the student’s program eligibility and English development level.
