A Monthly Note from Superintendent Scallon

February 27, 2026

Dear Weld RE-4 Families and Community,

I continue to be inspired by the growth of our students, both inside and outside the classroom. Competition season is in full swing, and the results of our students’ dedication are evident. From our Robotics and FFA teams advancing to state, to our individual state title winners in Wrestling, there is so much to celebrate in Weld RE-4.

The Power of Partnership Earlier this month, we held parent-teacher conferences across the district. I want to sincerely thank everyone who attended. When we speak about the importance of a partnership between our schools and our families, we truly mean it. Your involvement is the foundation of our students' success.

Facing Financial Realities While our students continue to excel, we are unfortunately facing sobering news regarding K-12 funding from the State of Colorado. Despite two state-commissioned studies highlighting the dire need for increased investment, the legislature continues to significantly underfund education.

Current reports indicate a substantial state budget shortfall for the upcoming fiscal year. There are even discussions of reinstituting the Budget Stabilization Factor, a mechanism that has already cost our district $64.2 million between 2011 and 2024.

Planning for the Path Ahead These state-level shortfalls place our district in a precarious position and unfairly shift the financial burden onto local taxpayers. We are currently working to maximize our existing budget, but we must be realistic about the future. To ensure our community's voice is heard, we will be conducting surveys and hosting discussions this spring to explore our options together. Our community has always banded together through both triumphs and challenges. I am confident that we will navigate this financial landscape the same way we always have: together, with our students’ best interests at the heart of every decision.

Thank you for your continued support of what matters most: our children.

With Gratitude,

Michelle Scallon Superintendent
