SEL

What is SEL? Weld RE-4 defines SEL as life skills that students need to be successful in school, in our community and, ultimately, in their chosen careers. This includes Colorado’s Essential Skills, Comprehensive Health and Physical Education Standards, and Social and Emotional Wellness standards as directed by legislation and adopted by the Colorado Department of Education.

Why does our district teach SEL? We are committed to ensuring that Weld RE-4 graduates have access to the content standards designed to prepare all Colorado students for the 21st-century workforce and for active citizenship upon receiving a high school diploma. Additionally, Colorado legislation passed in 2008 requires that our graduates (and high school graduates in all public schools across the state) demonstrate skills essential for success in professional life. These essential skills include creativity and innovation skills, critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, communication and collaboration skills, social and cultural awareness, civic engagement, initiative and self-direction, flexibility, productivity and accountability, character and leadership.

How were these skills decided? As part of the original 2008 legislation, there is a standards review and revision process in place for these skills to be revisited and clarified and the Colorado Talent Pipeline Report is used to research and guide revisions. Additions were made in 2015 and 2017 that included the (1) creation of a list of Essential Skills and (2) the ability to use information and communications technologies to find, evaluate, create and communicate information. These skills are currently under review through the Colorado Department of Education. Click here to take their survey.

What resources does Weld RE-4 use to teach these skills?

During the current 2021-22 school year, Weld RE-4 is reviewing resources used to teach SEL, Preschool-12. A recommendation for resource selection will be brought forward to the Board of Education prior to the end of the 2021-22 school year.
